Activated Carbon

Activated Carbon is a great product to have in the stables. Not only can it be used as an emergency treatment for poisoning and grain overload, regular use may help treat other gastrointestinal issues.

Activated Carbon acts like a big sponge and adsorbs the toxins so they can safely be passed through the animal.
There are many conditions in horses which are caused by or aggravated by the presence of toxins in the gut. The removal of these toxins with Activated Carbon may help to relieve symptoms.

The use of activated carbon may help:
Prevent and treat of scouring (diarrhoea)
Weight gain
To have a healthy coat, mane and tail (and no more poo stains)
to reduce gas
To balance your horses gut
To improve performance
Make your horse less "fizzy"

Most triggers of Laminitis involve the build up of toxins in the gut. The use of Activated Carbon may help to prevent the build up of these toxins and prevent the onset of laminitis in horses.

Our activated Carbon is made right here in Perth, WA so your purchase is supporting Australian based businesses. The activated carbon is a premium product which has been manufactured to the highest standards including for human use. It doesn't have harmful chemicals and antibiotics that are in many other products which are used to treat the same ailments and it has no nasty side effects.  Large doses MAY cause constipation in rare cases.

The use of activated carbon is not a substitute for proper nutritional or veterinary advice. Please contact your vet before using activated carbon if your horse is on medications.

The Merck Vet Manual has an extensive list of the uses of Activated Carbon (Activated Charcoal) for poisoning in animals. Click here to have a browse.

In my own experience, I had a Standardbred Stallion who was prone to colic and had ulcers. The treatment (omeprazole) was expensive and was a hassle to give to him as he would spit it out. I discovered Activated Carbon and began to feed it to him on a regular basis in his feed. I stopped the omeprazole treatment, and he put condition on, his coat improved and he didn't get colic again! After that, I started to look into the other benefits of the product and did some research and had many discussions with vets about the benefits, with one vet even saying he would happily recommend Activated Carbon to the racing industry instead of a big brand name in the prevention of Founder/Laminitis in horses.  I will continue to do research on Activated Carbon and would love to hear your success stories too.
